Sheridan awoke to fine herself in her room at home. I t took her a few minutes to recall just why she was here, then she remembered. She had been talking with Mel and he had asked her to marry him. She had said she couldn't and he left her listening to silence at her end of the receiver. She had screamed his name over and over into the dead object which was the phone. There was no response. Mel was gone. Sheri sagged into her fathers embrace. Ben held her gently as she sobbed that she had never felt so -so alive as she did since she met Mel- she couldn't lose him. How could he leave her like this. Sheri realized that she must have cried herself to sleep . Her parents had put her to bed. She smelled muffins, hazlenut-banana, fresh from the oven. Her mom must have been up early this morning . The muffins were Sheri's favorite.
Sheridan had just convinced herself that something must have happened while Mel was the phone with her. That was why he had left her hanging . That was it,that was the answer!
Sheridan suddenly felt a sense of relief. She slipped into her sweats -shirt and pants, then went to join her family. She had no sooner reached the door , when it sprang open. Her brother, Austin had come to fetch her, forgetting to knock he had just pushed it open. Now she would have to cope with a throbbing head! Not as bad as it might have been if her foot hadn't caught it first.
Mom was there with a cold cloth in hand to sooth and deflate the bump. I'm fine! Everyone looked worried. They looked, not at all convinced . How could she expect them to believe her after last night?
