Pandora: I looked through my things sorting through what was important and what could be thrown out... Alexis had said that sometimes the school would hold mail from students, for whatever reason. She worked in the office and promised that she could find a way to get those letters to us, it appeared that I had a couple of my own that hadn't been delivered. There was a knock on our door, and when I answered it, it was Alexis. She carried a large basket full of mail.
Alexis: Most of this stuff is for you. I guess they don't think that you're friends should be able to contact you or something. There's some here for Diane too, I'll have to wait until next week to take Susie and Clara's out; otherwise I'll get caught.
Pandora: Thank you Alexis, I really appreciate everything you had to go through to do this for me.
Alexis: Not a problem, just let me read some of this fan mail when you're done!!!
Pandora: Well, why don't you come in, and we'll see what's here; I doubt there's any fan mail! Alexis came in the room, and we went through the letters, there was a package from Po', and a letter also. In fact, I hadn't realized that I had anyone on my side at public school, much less the ones that wrote to me!! I opened the letter and package from Po'Em, and called her immediately, apologising for the delay. I just can't believe that they would take it upon themselves to morally police my mail by sender!!
I thought you forgot about me, I'm glad I was wrong. I actually sent some papers for you yesterday. I've decided I'm going shopping for office type stuff later, so that I don't have to worry about the school getting in the way of business. I reralized I was talking to an answering machine, and got off the phone. Alexis and I looked through the rest of my mail, and then we went office shopping; Diane didn't want to come with us.
Po'em: After lunch with Hennesy we talked about business, his and mine. He refreshed my memory concerning certain people we knew who I might consider hiring. I went over,in my head everything I knew about them. In the end I made offers of employment to 3 of them, two accepted.
I still had received nothing from Pandora concerning my first letter to her. I had now waited much to long which was not at all like me. I sent her a special phone she could use to keep in touch with me. I also repeated the same message I had sent to her before, making sure to tell her this was not the first time I had tried to contact her. Then I waited, noting on the calendar the date sent.

Pandora: Homesickness was infectious. I could tell that Dianne was feeling it, but for some reason she wasn't willing to talk about it, she wouldn't even open her letters from home much less her privacy curtain. The only way I could deal with it was writing home, reading the letters everyone sent, posting up the photos and things that came in the letters. It wasn't until after Thanksgiving that Diane came out of her 'episode'. Things were so much different now that I wasn't home. Mom was working for Po' and so was Hunter; I felt I had been replaced. I hadn't thought that going away to school would be the end of my involvement in the company... I was wrong I guess. Maybe I'd have to come up with a new business all my own. I thought better of it for the time being, I had enough to do already.

Diane: I liked Pandora. The teachers were excellent as were the town and school. Everything was perfect! After a while I began to look for the fly in the ointment.
In November I started to become home-sick. I missed my family and would quietly cry myself to sleep each night. I could feel myself pulling away from the friends I'd made. I felt alone and that I was the only one feeling this way now. I installed my privacy curtain -all I had to do was tell it to open or close and it would. I began to have it closed more than open and when she asked I told Pandora I wanted to be alone.
There were people we could talk to about our problems, I just didn't want to share mine.
I felt unable to say anything. I had wanted to come so badly and insisted so long and hard that I would feel foolish admitting that I was home-sick now. We had been told that it would -could happen but, I had thought it would be right away, not now.
Any mail I received went into a drawer unopened and stayed there. I would not answer it or return calls from home.
I pinned a "I am not in" notice on my privacy curtain and I requested permission to stay on campus over the holidays. That was farther than my family was willing to go and the second Saturday in November my father came to school for a conference.
I wanted to run to him and throw my arms around his neck and beg him to take me home, never to return but, I didn't. We sat and I listened while they discussed how I was doing and then I walked my dad to the car. I broke down and told him everything. He agreed to Thanksgiving but we would discuss Christmas at a later date. I felt so much better already.
My mood improved and I became my old self again, to the relief of my friends.

Lacey: We waited and nothing happened. I hoped that it was all over, that it was just an offer and that was all.

Diane: I was finally here! When I opened the door I saw that I wasn't going to be able to pick anything. My room mate was already here. I set my bag on the empty bed . Hi, I'm Diane, I said and held out my hand. When she turned around I saw that she was very pretty, with blond hair, not dyed, perfect I thought. Everything about her was perfect and I could tell that she came from money. It wasn't rocket science and I wasn't physic . It was her luggage, as simple as that.
She shook my hand and said hi. Her name was Pandora she told me. It was quite an unusual name I told her. Your father wouldn't happen to be Eagle Monroe would he?

Pandora: He's my dad alright, wish they hadn't given me such a landmark name sometimes though. Where are you from?

Diane: I'm from Pennsylvania, the small town of ____and you? I don't really know much about ...I paused, I didn't know how to say it, so I merely said ...Your family....and hoped that she wasn't insulted.

Pandora: Somerset, Texas. We spent some time getting things set up, and getting familiar with each other. This was going to be better than I thought. I had expected that everyone would know all about both me and my family. Diane and I made all kinds of friends, and I got exactly what I wanted out of the whole thing. I took the classes I wanted, there were no rumors being spread around about me, and there was no little brother picking on me about how serious I always am.

Po'Em: Marilyn would be starting school this year as would Chablis. I hoped that it would be an exciting adventure for them. I was excited! Pandora was going to a privet school now and I missed her. Her brother Hunter wanted to step in and take her place in the company. I did agree to listen to his ideas and if I used any of them he would be compensated.
The business had grown so much that it was getting to be to much for me to handle alone. Actually,it was past that point already. I would have to hire someone I could trust to help me run it. Pandora and I would also have to find a way to have meetings while she was at school. I needed to be able to talk to her the way we always had. I wasn't sure she could handle it in the same way as before and I wondered if she wanted to . I could buy her out or make her vice-president of special projects. That would put her out of the loop and she wouldn't have to worry about the company for long periods of time. While I still had the thought in my head I sat and wrote to her about it. She could let me know what she wanted to do, in writing.

My story books were continuing to sell, people didn't seem to tire of them. I had just finished another collection of stories and my publisher was talking about a book signing tour. He would have to wait for an answer. I would need to discuss it with Hennesy. It would require more planning now that Marilyn was in school and I wasn't sure what was happening with things on the Whale.
I called Marijuana-Hi girl, how would you like to work for me, I asked her.

Marijuana: Doing what, exactly?
Po : Helping me with advertising for my furniture company. Doing whatever your best at. After all, you went to school to learn it you might as well use it, right? We talked about other plans-things we wanted to do and what had happened that morning. When we hung-up I realized that it was time for lunch and Hennesy would be home soon. I hoped that he would be bring take-out although food was not my first thought. I would make my other calls later. The company would wait.

BJ: We ate at one of the old places near the school. Then headed home. We hadn't seen anyone we knew but, had a good time anyway. The next day , Monday, Keely found out that we would have to rearrange our dance schedule. I told her it wasn't a problem we could always figure something out. By the beginning of September our classes were over and Caroline had been back for a week or so. Now I had to remember to lock my door. The condo was finished soon after Caroline started school and they came back to Summerset to see it with me. I was very pleased with how everything had come together. The only thing missing were my personal things-clothes etc. Keely and Caroline went to visit family for the rest of the time they were here. I stayed at the condo and made a list of things I would need and began to make the place my own. I took out the pictures I had intended to hang or set on the floating shelves. I sorted through them and as often happens when people start sorting through photos I got caught up in them. I finally set the ones of Mercedes and I aside I would do something with them later. The chosen ones finally found themselves in frames -on the wall or shelf. There was one from Christmas that I would enlarge. That taken care of, I headed for the market. I would only buy enough for a few days and each time after that I would add to what I would need. It sounded like a good plan to me. I gave Keely another years rent for my room. I was comfortable there and now it felt like going home. I was given a house warming party by my friends, at my condo. We had a good time and I received some nice gifts too. My life went on pretty much as it always had, only now that Mercedes wasn't in it , I started to actually date again. In the time I had been with her I had only had two very short affairs. A few people asked if Mercedes and I had divorced. I was surprised at the number of people I would meet in the next year who believed that.

BJ: I laughed a little, you mean Caroline's behavior, don't you? I don't see why her behavior should cause you to lose your job Keely. Have you tried putting her in a private school? Catholic, maybe ? You don't have to be of that religion to go there. You could always transfer to Summerset-your job that is, if the company has a base there . You would have a bigger support base. Don't worry about that right now. The job sounds like a dream, enjoy it. Look, it's eleven now and dance class is tomorrow morning. I'm going to get ready for bed. I lightly kissed her lips if you need or want anything that's where I'll be. Keely, what I said earlier, about us- forget it . I'm fine--good night.
Keely: Oh crud, yes, that's what I meant! I couldn't believe I had mixed up myself and my daughter. Good night. I wasn't so sure he was fine, but it also didn't make sense that he would end a relationship; rather than stop the affair to begin with. Ah yes, dance class in the morning, off to bed I go!
BJ:The next morning we went to class as usual and although the reasons for taking it had changed I still enjoyed it. I felt more relaxed and at ease with myself and Keely now. We talked to our instructor about Monday's class telling him that we might have to change hours or I might need a new partner-we weren't sure yet. He nodded, and I told him I would let him know as soon as we did. He thanked us and we left. Keely, how would you like to go with me to check on how my condo is coming along. I haven't been there for a couple of days and I want to see what they have done.
Keely: Yea, it sounds like an adventure. They haven't been doing well without you being there to provide supervision have they?
BJ: No they haven't . Mom is ready at a moments notice to call in the whole Cash clan- I told her I had it under control, even laughed about it. If they screw up again though I may decide to let her handle it. Would you like to eat when we get there or before? I would like to change before we leave, something more casual I think. Do you agree?
Keely: I think it would be wise to change, it might be a good idea to eat first too.
BJ: We went home changed and ate. Keely had all kinds of food put up from her cooking -baking spree of the week before. We talked about class and the people in it. We had to find time to practice and a place. I looked at the clock and we decided to get going. We arrived in the park near my condo at 12:30. There seemed to be a lot of activity going on. Good or bad I couldn't tell yet. I turned to Keely, does it seem to you that there are way too many workers here, or is it just me? I did hire my own inspector but, I really don't know anything about it myself. Maybe I should ask uncle Henry ?
Keely: Ummm, I'd say so. How can any work get done with so many people in the way?
BJ: So that is exactly what I did. When I called I told him who I was and I appoligized for bothering them on a Sunday. Then I told him what we had discovered and what had happened the week before.
Henry: Do you have your paper work with you Boyd ? He told me that he did . I suggested that he and his friend come over to the house and we would look things over together. Then I hung up. Sarah, I walked to the door of my study and spoke to my wife. It looks as if we will be having company for dessert -two more. Do you recall my sister Grace calling a few days ago? Well, evidently Boyd does need our help. Is Aiden working or is he still up here ? I'd like him to join us,since we are having company and it is family. I can use the intercom if he is already gone.
BJ: I looked at the phone, then up at Keely. I guess we're having dessert with my uncle. Ready?
Keely: Certainly.
Sarah: I think he's still up here, I'll grab him.
Henry: Thank you Sarah I said, catching her cheek with a kiss before she left to ensnare our son. I took the time before they arrived to go over what information I had collected about Boyd's project. From what I could gather so far it all looked straight forward and not that complicated. I set the file aside, I wasn't going to worry about anything yet, there was no need. When they arrived we were just gathering in the library and after introduction, dessert was brought in the usual small talk took place. I took Boyd into the den and went over things with him.
BJ: Your more than welcome to get together with the contractor and look over the project if that will help. At this point I am completely at a loss. We went to the condo and I wandered around with Keely while uncle Henry, the contractor and the inspectors talked. After half an hour it was all sorted out. Uncle Henry seemed satisfied anyway and he would know. We all thanked him -inspectors, contractor, everyone and then he left. Keely and I now had the rest of the afternoon to ourselves and I asked her if she would like to go aboard the Whale. We could relax, practice our dancing, swim, almost do anything or we could just walk around town, talk and visit the places we used to go when we were very young.
Keely: I opted for the latter, it had been a long time since I'd been in town. We walked around, stopping to notice things that had changed, and remembering things we'd done in school.

BJ: I had only been awake for two hours now. I had ended a relationship and raised holy hell when I discovered nothing was being done on the condo. I had finally ended up at my parents home. We discussed the condo problem and mom was ready to call in the whole Cash clan . Everyone from her grandpa Maxwell -her dad, her brother Henry - Aunt Savannah. Stop! Mom, please,it's alright .
Arizona: Yes, Grace please stop and don't even mention Spain and Victoria's husband. Dad was laughing and soon we all were.
Grace: I guess that would be over- kill wouldn't it she laughed.
Arizona: Your welcome to stay with us. You know that son, right?
Grace: Yes Boyd, why don't you stay here, we have room . It's been quite a while since we've had a chance to really visit with you. Please stay, won't you?
BJ: I thought about for a few minutes. Alright, but you have to let me help out mom-dad, deal ?
Certainly they both replied .
BJ: It had been great staying with them and I promised we would do it again. It was about 10 pm now and I was headed back to my room at Keely's . I would know soon enough just what I was walking into. I unlocked the door and walked in. I put my things in my room, then went into the kitchen. Keely was sitting on one of the stools and it looked like she had been reading something . Hello, I said to her and helped myself to some juice. Did you find the job of your dreams yet, I asked and sat down beside her.
Keely: The job of my dreams? Well, nearly. It's a marketing firm, I'd basically be a go-fer. I think they called it an office assistant. I think I'll take it though, a girls gotta start somewhere.
BJ: When do you start, do you know yet? I was just wondering if you would still have time for the dance classes. The reason for my taking them has changed now. I no longer have a deadline for completion, so it won't matter if we only manage to have one class a week. Assuming your still interested that is. I've just recently been reminded of why I have never taken anything for granted. Keely about our affair, I'm not sure I can handle it right now-
Keely: No, I don't know yet. I'll be calling them on Monday to find out. I understand BJ,
BJ: What do they market? Do you mean it's an advertising agency?
Keely: Yea, I guess so. He said they have 5 large projects that they're currently working on, he wouldn't say who the clients were or anything though.
BJ: So you have to call and let him know if you have accepted the job, is that it? Any others that intrest you ?
Keely: Yea, that about covers it, the others don't hold much of a future; This company is offering a lot of things that just make sense for what I want and what I need.
BJ: And that is -what?
Keely: They'll send me to school, I get a month of vacation yearly, the opportunity to relocate in the future, I won't need to stay late, basically they've guaranteed that I won't need financial help for anything from my family. Plus all the medical coverage and whatnot. He told me that once I finish my classes I'm guaranteed a promotion. Provided that I do well, I need to hold a certain GPA. I think I actually stand a chance at this place. The others weren't as flexible, if this ranch camp hasn't had a profound effect on Keely's behavior, I'm guaranteed to be right back out there looking for another job with the other places.
Keely: I didn't even get a chance to say anything, and BJ had already hung up. He had just left Gram. I grabbed my purse and went to see her. Gram? She was on the couch, not crying, but more like she was in shock. Are you alright gram?
Mer: Keely, Let's go to the spa today. I stood, grabbed my purse, and dragged Keely to the spa. We spent the entire remainder of the day getting facials, and all the other spa type things.
Keely: Gram seemed to be fine. She was handling this really well considering everything that was going on. She would have kept me busy all week, but I did have to work.
Mer: No more work Keely, you need clothes; business suits, shoes, all that stuff. I took her shopping, and when I was done, she had enough clothes for a year.

Kari: So being a barbecue, and a very hot day, I decided we could still sit in the pool and watch the people show up. After all, we're old women, no matter what we are willing to admit! We sat in the water, and gabbed about who we thought might have been invited. I'm sure they've sent every man they could find! Whom do you two think will show?
Mercedes: Who could they invite that we don't already know?
Kari: I have no idea, what do you think Ariana?
Ariana: I think you should have let me bring Romeo! There must be some people here that we don't know. To tell the truth I never bothered to get to know most of them unless it was business . Why would I Chandler was everything to me. OH no, I added aloud not now. I don't want to think about him now! I just want him to go away! I splashed water on my face and looked from Mer to Kari and said in a ragged voice, I'll be alright just give me a minute.
Kari: Perhaps we should exit the pool, the guests are arriving....
Ariana: Sounds like a great idea to me, I said as I climbed out and started walking towards the house- Coming I asked?
Kari: Yea, I'm coming I'm coming!
Ariana: I wore a mid length demin skirt,camisole-under a white delicately embroidered featherweight gossamer rayon shirt and boots. A touch here and there of make-up and a shake of my head and I was ready to go. Mer have you seen my necklace? Kari, it's just a chain with a small camera charm on it. I paused in my search. The two of you are looking mighty good. If you'll just hold still, okay, got you, my camera works! Perhaps this will be fun after all.
Kari: Leather mini, I laughed. No, not today. I grabbed the denim one instead, and a sleeveless tank top. Then the charm bracelet, I'm all set after makeup!
Mercedes: I just bought all these new clothes, things are over with BJ, and I have suddenly lost all idea of what to wear.
Ariana: My necklace ? anyone? Wait , did you say over and BJ in the same sentence? Mer, are you alright? When did all this happen? Kari, there's the necklace, would you hand it to me please?
Kari: Here it is hon, exactly what I was thinking... What happened?
Mer: It was just time, really. I was having dreams of him and Keely together, and if we're not together, it doesn't matter who he's sleeping with. Not like he loved me anyhow. Come on guys, I brought my whole closet with me, help me out here?
Ariana: What about the red denim sleeveless dress. If you get cold you can add a sweater or one of your jackets. Yes - no? What do you think Kari ? You could always do pants or shorts? Am I not helping?
Kari: No, you aren't helping Ariana. Mercedes wear the purple sundress, and that's the final decision.
Ariana: Okay, that will work. I clicked off a few more pictures. Now what, I said as I wandered to a window where I could get a good look at the people arriving, and clicked some more. Kari, your going to be late to your own party! Shouldn't you be down there with Denzel and Eagle greeting your guests?
Kari: I suppose, but at the same time, I have no idea what to do!!!! Well, now that Mer is dressed, lets get a move on. We made our way back downstairs, and I greeted Eagle and Denzel with hugs. Hello boys.
Eagle: Hi mom. Your looking good! Ladies , the two of you are looking good too.
Kari: Thank you very much.
Denz: Mom, ladies, shall I take you to the party and start introducing everyone?
Mercedes: Why certainly, come on Ariana, Kari.
Ariana: I followed the four of them with my camara. I'm right behind you I called to them, keep going. We met quite a few men that day. I thought there were maybe three that Kari had any intrest in at all . Mercedes would pull out her diva self every now and then but, that is who she was MERCEDES. Bees to honey I thought to myself. Me? Well I wasn't ready for any of this. I was here for support only. I used my camara as a shield and did my best to blend into the scenery. Plan 2, if plan 1 didn't work was to talk about my husband. I'd been told that was not something you should do. Plan 3 get drunk and thow-up! The throwing up part was very important, men didn't like you to get sick around them. I enjoyed myself, the food was good and music also and I began to think I wouldn't have to worry about any plan.
Ariana: After the Memorial Service, about a week after, Romeo and I went through the closets and pulled every piece of Chandlers clothing out . I called one of those places that give the clothes to people looking for work but not able to afford the clothes to make a good impression on the would be employer. The other clothes I sent to several shelters around the area I gave the linnens, towels all of it away and I put the house up for sale. I kept only a few things- my photo equipment and all related things my personal things and Chandlers watch, cuff links, one pair and his rings. Aurora was horror stricken by my actions, that was how she put it . They had already taken what they wanted and I saw no reason to burden myself with the rest. I went shopping for another lawyer and when I found her we went and relieved the old one of all things related to me. I wanted this done in person to be sure everything was there and he had no time to change anything of hold anything back. I kept the tape Chandler had made for me. I asked that the new lawyer go through the will again to be sure that everything had been handled correctly. I wanted to know that everything was in order at my age why take chances. I moved into a hotel and put everything into storage for now. Romeo I kept with me it didn't bother me that they might think I had a lover for that is what he was-my lover.

BJ: I would still be able to get back in time for work, no problem. Things seemed to be moving in slow motion . While I was in overdrive.
Mer: We met up with Taru and Ingrid, and they took us hang-gliding, it was beautiful. After, we hiked back to their home, and ate supper.
BJ: Aside form having to wait for up drafts and gage down drafts the time in the air was well worth the wait. The view was spectecular and I enjoyed their company as we walked back to their home. When we finished eating it was getting dark and I would have to leave soon I wasn't sure if Mer would stay or leave. I would be going to work. We hadn't spent time alone to speak of since I had arrived on the dock at 4pm. That didn't matter, we did have a good time. I said my good byes and thanked them for a wonderful time, then turned to Mer and asked if she would walk out with me. Thank you for introducing me to your friends Mercedes. I had a very good time. Will you be out with the group doing your thing when I get in tomorrow morning? Sorry, shouldn't have asked. I should be done with my run and back at the loft around 7, I think. I don't remember how long it takes. I kissed her cheek and left. I made it on time, sat down and began my monologue. The next morning I changed into shorts and hung the other clothes in my locker and started my run to the loft. No one was there I made myself coffee and went to take a bath. I tossed in some bubble bath found the inflatable pillow blew it up as I gathered everything else I thought I might need and climbed in. I rested my head on the pillow and relaxed. I started to feel my eyes shut and quickly opened them, scrubbed myself up, cleaned things up tossed the coffee and put clean sheets on the bed. By this time time my body was dry and I went to bed hoping I would be able to sleep.
Mer: I got home late, and woke early, taking PJ for her run. When I got back from our run, BJ was already asleep. I took a shower, and lay down with BJ for a nap. It was going to be rough--getting over him. I slept, and decided while I slept that I had no choice, and I could do this. Surely it wouldn't be easy but I felt much better when I woke from my nap. It was still early, so PJ and I went shopping. I must have replaced my entire wardrobe! The old clothes, I packed up when we returned and gave to the needy. I made some lunch, and it was ready when BJ woke up.
BJ: It was almost noon when I woke, I hadn't moved . Mer, I called my voice deep from sleep, are you there? I pulled my clothes on slowly, my favorite jeans and my blue cashmere sweater and went barefoot into the other room calling her once more.
Mer: Hello, sleep well?
BJ: Like a rock I guess. I helped myself to some water and my voice began to waken up. I put my arms around her and kissed her good morning. You look unbelievably beautiful today and I kissed her again.
Mer: Why thank you, would you like some lunch?
BJ: Thanks, I think I'll take just a little bit longer to wake up first. Did you have a good time last night? Talk to me Mer.
Mer: Yes, I had a wonderful time with you yesterday.
BJ: I'm glad you thought of it and I did have a good time sweetheart but, I meant after I left.
Mer: Yes, it's been a long time since I've seen them, and it was nice to be able to catch up with them.
BJ: Do you realize that this was only the second time we have spent any time with your friends? Sometimes I wonder if your ashamed of me but that can't be true is it Mer?
Mer: BJ, I'm not ashamed of you. I just keep to myself. BJ, have you started an affair with Keely?
BJ: Mercedes -We don't talk about my affairs. Whether the answer is yes or no the question is off limits.
Mer: I'm sorry BJ, I already knew the answer and I shouldn't have asked. In fact, if I had thought about it at all I could nearly have predicted it happening. I must be the dumbest person I know, to let this sort of thing happen to me twice! I fell on the couch, and began to feel weak, like I hadn't gotten well at all.
BJ: Mercedes -you infuriate me! I turned towards her as she sank onto the couch. I don't know what your talking about and the fact is if you were anyone else I would be out that door.
Mer: What exactly is it that makes me different BJ?
BJ: I know that this is just your way to avoid telling me why you've just decided that your the dumbest person around. So what is it that is happening to you for the second time? We've been together for almost four years now Mercedes. What is it?
Mer: How was I going to say this? What was I going to say? Had it been that long? BJ, I wasn't getting over Clay's death; I was getting over Russ. I climb that mountain, and come back down, and dream about things. These dreams BJ, they won't go away; and all I can see is you and Keely together. I want them to stop BJ, I just want the damn dreams to go away.
BJ: Let me see if I understand what you are trying to tell me, okay? When Russ introduced us, he was trying to help you get over him? I thought at the time it was a combination of Clay and Russ you were running from. When after only a few days -a week at the most you told me you loved me , I didn't believe you . Having you leave Mer, I was right to do that. Taking you back on the Whale that weekend was wrong, my mistake, I guess. I love to make love with you. Maybe I wanted someone steady in my life, not that it has ever felt that way. As for Keely and your dreams, I'm not sure I can do anything about that. You need to talk to her. I don't love Keely and I'm not sure whether that makes your dream better or worse for you. I would dearly love to hold you in my arms and tell you that I love you, that I'll never leave you- I would love to be able to kiss you and make it all go away and it might for a little while. You would hate me for it later. I'm gonig to pack up and leave Mercedes, in the end that's the only thing that will make your dreams go away. I got up from where I sat, across from her,to get the few things I had. Not much of it meant anything to me, I tossed them into my leather pack and put on my boots. With cuff-links in my pocket and bag in hand I left. When I was on the street I called Keely. I'll be back late Saturday night Keely. Your -Mercedes needs you, she's been having dreams and I've left her. If not you someone -not Dionne', maybe your mother or kari? I ended the call, there wasn't anything else to say.
Lacey: When I didn't show up on the third day they would have their answer. If they couldn't control me -What did they want from me? I still couldn't figure it out and I had no idea what they would try next. I tried to think -was there something I had that they wanted-wouldn't they just ask me for it? None of it made sense to me. All I could do was wait and Steph would wait with me. I couldn't send her away, she wouldn't just go and I couldn't ask her to. That's when the phone rang! I jumped and dropped the glass I was holding. It splintered into a million pieces and the phone kept ringing.
Steph: I jumped when the phone rang, and I didn't' know if I should answer, or clean up the glass from the floor.
Lacey: I picked up the phone and heard -Hello, hello is anyone there? I recognized the voice, it was Row-with great relief I said hello
Rowena: Hi, how are you Lacey? Is Stephanie there I'd like to invite her to lunch.
Lacey: Yes, she is , and I'm alright. Hang on and I'll get her for you . I'm glad you called Row, Steph could use some time out of the house. I'll be right back.
Steph: Hi Row, how is everything?
Rowena: Can't complain, I called about lunch, can you make it - Peppe's at one o'clock?
Steph: I didn't want to leave Lacey alone, what if they came while I was out? I looked over at him, and he gave me his reassuring smile and nod. Yes, is that the one on third street?
Rowena: that's the one - we'll dish-see you then! Steph and I hadn't seen each other in a long time. I wanted to catch-up with her. Life just went by so fast .
Stephanie and I arrived at the same time. We did our hugging and kissing and then went in Peppe's . I felt like a teenager again-almost. It's so good to see you Steph!
Steph: It's been so long! What have you been doing with yourself?
Rowena: Trying to raise my daughter. She is a less demonstrative version of myself and too smart for her own good. She has no true focus. I wonder where she gets that from.
Steph: It would have to be you Row! I'm beginning to think that the obsession with flying spaceships is genetic or something. Ransom both told us about his plans, and left in the same night.
Rowena: That must have been difficult for you and Lacey. When did he leave and did he tell you when he would finish his training ? I understand that they do get time off before they get permanent assignments. It's just a bit of information I picked up from Ari. We were talking about his teaching in his youth. We don't talk about me. My youth is a mine field; that every now and then we tip toe through. The only safe time would be Montana. Speaking of which, have you heard from anyone? I haven't not Hailey, Vicki -anyone.
Steph: No actually I haven't. He left about 3 days ago, didn't tell us much at all. It's probably better that he didn't though. Tip-toeing around stories of Brian..
Rowena: Stephanie, not stories of Brian, of me. Most of my life is filled with
Brian and the things we did together, built together. He couldn't be closer to me if he were my brother. Ari just won't let himself understand.
By the way, I heard that Anita and Latham will be performing in town to raise money for the hospital. Will you and Lacey go? I'm going to try to get in touch with her so we can all get together sometime. You would come wouldn't you Steph? Stephanie, is there something else that's bothering you ? You seem a little tense.
Steph: I'm just a little frazzled still by Ransoms decision, and some unidentified person called looking to put Lacey in their debt. That's what I meant, I guess it didn't come out that way though. We definitely had planned on going, I just haven't gotten around to picking up the phone and calling people to see who else is coming.
Rowena: Don't worry about calling Steph, you have enough on you mind. What didn't come out the way you meant it, the Brien thing ? It's okay. The thing happening with Lacey would scare me too Steph . There are many things going on with Ari that I don't know about. Probably just as well, I imagine he doesn't want me losing my head or his.

Ell: I was simply skittish Rudy. I was fine until Kari started talking about showers and wedding planning, our wedding . I can't explain why it is that I can plan a whole tour date bookings, weddings, funerals and handle the most outrageous temper-tantrums, almost everything, as long as it isn't that close or personal to me. I had been standing and gesturing with my hands, now I sat down next to Rudy turning my body to face him and absentmindedly playing with his fingers as I gazed into his face waiting for him to open my eyes to the truth of things.
Rudy: Ell, it's as simple as this; you've spent too much time worrying about other people. It's just easier to deal with other people than yourself, because you haven't done anything for yourself, you do know that Kari will throw you a party anyway right? She's very good at knowing what to do for other people, and how to surprise them also. Ell, I think maybe you should think about how much you are willing to do for people. We don't get paid to plan weddings for our clients, or funerals, or any of that sort of thing, unless they are getting paid, neither are we. Thus you found yourself completely up your clients rear ends, like you absolutely needed to kiss ass or you'd go out of business or something equally awful. I love you Ell, and we're going on vacation next week, we leave Wednesday morning. NO WORK involved--period.
Ell: I felt myself stiffen , my head where? Because I care? And then when Rudy told me he loved me and I started to relax then said vacation- no work- Rudy what would I do with no work! I asked him unbelievingly.
Rudy: There's plenty for us to do hon, trust me.
Ell: I do Rudy, trust you that is. We couldn't do this in stages could we? Or are you going to tell me that I don't do stages well? Where are we going?
Rudy: Where? We're going somewhere that you can't sneak work in. How does one do vacation in stages?
Ell: You know start with a walk in the park or something like that. Rudy, honey, where could we go that we couldn't work? Forget all that. I love you and I will do my best to relax and stay, I said the next words really fast -away from work!
Rudy: Ell, we've walked in the park. There will be no work, no paper for you to write on, no phones for you to use, and no transports either. No computers, none of it. I'm pulling out all the artillery, you'll be too busy for work, understand me? I kissed her lightly, and held her close.
Ell: I think .. That I am beginning to, could we try that again?
Rudy: Most certainly darling.
Ell: I was dreaming, I knew I must be. Rudy was holding me close and calling me darling. This was fairy tale material but, I would go on living it for as long as I could.

Keely: Alright, so she's not trying to take over my life, and she has my best interests in mind, but some warning would have been nice! Especially since she's putting money into my bank account, and doesn't plan to stop until I get 'settled' into a new higher paying job.
BJ: Do you plan to go back to school or are you going to refuse her help and put the money into a separate account for Caroline and her education? If you really don't want her help you will have to tell her face to face!
Keely: I suppose that I'll be going to some interviews, and see what happens. I had resigned myself to the fact that grams wasn't going to back down, and she was right. Speaking of Mercedes; what are your plans?
BJ: Plans? What do you mean?
Keely: Well, you did say you had moved in with her until the remodeling of your house was finished.
BJ: Yes, I did . The condo is supposed to be done in August but, I haven't done any checking up on it. I think I'll do that now and see how things are coming along. I'll see you Sunday as usual ? I'll be with Mercedes if you need me. I kissed her lightly on the lips and left. I took the transport back home. I went by the condo to see how far along they were. They took me through and by the time we finished August had turned into September, maybe October for the finish date. I left not reassured by my visit and decided to check out the sailboat. It was a beautiful day for sailing and Mer was there. She looked to be as healthy as she had been when we made our first climb and had lost none of her radiance. I waved to her and PJ, evidently deciding she liked me once again was paddling towards me. I help her ashore. I have a gift for you Mer. I gave PJ a bone, fresh from Calabrese's I told her.
Mer: BJ decided to show his face. Sucking up to PJ even. Oh hell what did it matter, it's not like I really expected anything from him. I rode the dingy back to meet him and PJ on dry land. I greeted him with a hug, how have you been?
BJ: Fine, I haven't been gone that long have I ? Your cap my dear, every captain should have one. I set it on her head and put my arms around her then leaned back slightly to see how it looked. Not bad, I told her and kissed her hello. Have you been out here long I asked loosening my hold a bit or is it that you were expecting someone else? I can go Mer, I told her a bit concerned that I might be interrupting her plans.
Mer: No, I wasn't expecting anyone actually. Maybe Keely-- I expect that she's not exactly happy with me right now.
BJ: I'm sure you only have her best interests in mind.
Mer: What are your plans for today?
BJ: My only plans for today are to spend it with you. I stopped by the Condo before I came to see what they had done. Mer, they're telling me maybe September or October now. I'm not sure it will even be done then. That is as much depression as I want to deal with today. You look as if you have regained all your strength, have you?
Mercedes: Even more so than I had expected.
BJ: Really? That's wonderful, isn't it?
Mer: I suppose, in some ways more than others. I think I'd rather not have so much time to think though.
BJ: What would you like to do with the rest of the day?
Mercedes: I think I'd like to do some hang-gliding, what do you think?
BJ: We had been walking and I stopped, my arm around her waist. I would love it , if your sure? What, I asked as we started to walk again, made you think of that? Have you any idea where?
Mercedes: Like I said, I've got too much thinking time! Asia, I know some people there who can get things ready for us quickly.
BJ: All right! What are we waiting for. Maybe I should buy some long pants though! Lets go, wait, what about PJ ? I could feel the adrenaline already and if I died ? Besides my family, who would care, that was just a momentary thought floating through my mind. This would be exciting, the sort of thing I loved to do.
Mer: PJ we'll drop off on the way to the store, so let's get going then.
BJ: If we're going home I can just grab some pants there. By the way Mercedes, what does one wear hang gliding?
Mer: I suppose as long as it's warm and not bulky, you can wear it... jeans and a sweatshirt? I really don't know!
BJ: Annoying isn't it, when you don't know, I laughed. I found my sweatshirt and a pair of jeans and I was ready.
Mer: I made the call to my friends in Asia, and they told me what we'd need to know, coordinates and what not. They'd be ready for us when we got there.
Bj: We pulled ourselves together and said good bye to Ceili and the others and went back to Keely's. Shower I asked? Afterward we slept. The next day was her day to relax.
Keely: In the morning, I called the bank to see what my balance was. There was too much money there! Gram had called and left me a message--she was going to be supporting me and Caroline, I needed to find myself something less menial than waiting tables she said. Once I had gotten settled into a position that would support us comfortably, she would stop putting money in my account.
Mercedes: The idea was that Keely shouldn't be living this way. All the other grandchildren were established, and taking care of themselves, and I had more than enough money; Keely may as well have some of it.
Keely: Later in the afternoon, I got the package she sent, all sorts of information about schools, jobs, etc. I couldn't look at this stuff now, I tossed it on the counter and went about practicing my 'chef' skills.
BJ: I'd let her just have her morning to herself, she had things to do and I went to the radio station and visited, off air. Then I took the familiar run back to the house. It was hot my clothes were hanging on my body. When I opened the door the steamy aroma of food cooking came rushing out. My dry mouth started to water-water, yes I needed water. She was cooking alright. I took a glass down and helped myself to a cool drink.
Keely: I was watching the stew simmer, and sifting through the papers gram Mercedes had sent, and tossing them one by one into the garbage when BJ got home. Then I found the appointment book, in which my grandmother had set up a loose schedule of interviews for new jobs. Well, not loose but spaced out. I tried calling her back, and yelling at her, but she wasn't home and wasn't answering her cellular either.
BJ: I watched as she tossed broshures into the trash, then picked up the phone . She didn't look like a happy camper as she punched in a new set of numbers. I was begining to shiver now, so I went into take my shower and dress. I put on a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. When I came out Keely was standing over the stew and tapping her foot. I sat at the counter and asked what was wrong?
Keely: Gram is trying to take over my life, she's set up about a thousand job interviews and she won't answer her phone.
BJ: Is there anyway she could tell that it was you ? Never mind, ofcourse there is, I told her, that's why she won't answer. She wants you to think about it a little longer.

Ell: I met with Kari and asked if she would be more comfortable with casual or if she wanted to go the whole nine yards? People tend to behave better when they are all dressed up but they aren't as relaxed. Which would you like I asked. I've been told that cost doesn't enter into it so it is totally up to you.
Kari: I think casual will work alright, the nicer side of casual that is.
Ell: What about a theme, I don't want you to be stuck with tons of men milling around you checking you out like they would a horse or vise versa at least not so obviously so. It would freak me out. Rodeo, or luau. I think that beach party would be too informal for you. Barbecue?
Kari: BBQ is fine, but you really should just hire him a personal assistant, and let them do this stuff. Nevermind, that gives me an idea for his birthday/Christmas. Whatever you decide is fine, I'll make sure that everything is stocked up.
Ell:Thanks Kari but that won't be necessary, I can handle the stocking-up and ordering. If you could show me around so I can get an idea of where to set things up that would be great. As for Eagle, its a labor of love and what would I do with all that spare time?
Kari: I'm sure Rudy could think of something, and planning the wedding might be a good idea. Follow me, I'll show you where everything is.
Ell: I blushed, that sounds like something my mother might have said I replied as I followed her outside. Kari and I sat on the porch when we were done and I sketched out for her what I thought we would do and where things would go. What do you think ? Any changes? Suggestions?
Kari: No, it's all fine. This is all just a lot of fuss for fuss sake, if you ask me. A party that is too well planned will be no fun at all. I have enough staff to cover things, they're used to large BBQ's. I hooked up the "shopping list" and got an inventory of all the dishes, silverware and food that I had, and then I gave it to Ell. There's no reason to make things harder than they need to be.
Ell: If you would rather have your staff do it, that's fine, really but I will see to it that they get paid what it would cost to have someone else do it, or rather I will give you the money and you can see to it. You would know best who should get what. Kari, there isn't much fuss in the plans, not really. Music is the next item, any ideas. I don't know how many musical people are coming but as a rule they don't like to perform where they are being entertained unless the situation is just right, they can't be counted on.
Kari: I have a music collection that rivals the best of music collections, as I've recently discovered. Look at this- I took Ell inside to the den and showed her the disc collection, and then the automatic DJ system, which was really just a computer with a huge memory, and the ability to hold up to 100 discs for playback. I've got music covered.
Ell: This is a beautiful system, he must have caught a lot of friends and family on these to. I felt a catch in my throat and cleared it. These will be more than suficiant I told her . We talked of tables, chairs serving etc. down to the silverware and dishes which we would use. No paper or plastic! I stood up, do you need me for anything, I asked her?
Kari: Only the bridal shower, which will be planned after this shinannigan is over with. Your bridal shower, not mine.
Ell: My what? No I don't need a bridal shower, I told her . There isn't anyone to invite and this isn't my first marriage, really thanks but you shouldn't bother. I picked up my things and made a hasty retreat to my car saying if you need any help just call other wise I think you have it covered. I shut the door and left.
